THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, March 20
Murali
has won the Kerala state award for best actor and Manju Warrier for best
actress for 1996. Jayaraj's Desaadanam has bagged sevenawards, including that
for best director, but was rated below Siby Malayil's Kaanaakkinavu which won
the award for the second best film.
The
State Film Awards for 1996 announced here today had a surprise _ no film has
been selected for the Best Feature Film award. In an unprecedented move, the
judging committee has decided not to confer this award on any entry. Announcing
the awards at a press meet, the committee chairman, Mr. Kumar Sahni, said the
entries were of a low standard and none merited the Best Feature Film award.
The
award for the second best feature film has been given to ``Kanakkinavu'',
produced by P. V. Gangadharan and directed by Sibi Malayil. Jayaraj has been
selected as the best director of the year, for his work in ``Desaadanam''.
Murali
won the award for his role in ``Kanakkinavu'' and Manju for her role in 'Ee
Puzhayum Kadannu'.
Oduvil
Unnikrishnan has been chosen the second best actor for his role in
'Thoovalkottaram' and 'Mini Nair' the second best actress for her role in
Desaadanam. Master Kumar has won the award for the best child artiste for his
lead role in 'Desaadanam.
The
other awards won by Desaadanam include K.J. Yesudas (best playback singer),
Radhakrishnan (best cinematographer) Krishnanunni (best sound recordist) and
Venmani Vishnu (best dubbing artist).
The
best story of the year award has gone to T.A. Razaak for Kaanaakkinavu. He has
won the award for the best screenplay of the year as well.
Prominent
among special award winners is Jayaram for his outstanding portrayal of
different roles.
The
J. C. Daniel Award for Life-Time Achievement goes to the veteran
cinematographer-director, A. Vincent. ``Kulam'', produced by V. S. Gangadharan
and directed by Lenin Rajendran, had been voted the best film with aesthetic
quality and mass appeal. The award for promising debut direction has been given
to Dunderdas for his film Sallaapam and the award for the best book on cinema
in Malayalam has been won by I. Sunderdas for his work Sanchariyude Veedu.
The
best documentary of the year is Silent Screams: a village chronicle, produced
by Jose Sebastian and directed by O.K. Johny.
The
awards in the other categories were as follows: Best lyricist _ Kaithapram
Damodaran Namboodiri (the song, ``Vennila ChandanaKinnam'', from the film
``Azhakiya Ravanan''); best music director _ Vidyasagar (``Azhakiya Ravanan'');
best background score _ Johnson (``Sallapam''); best male playback singer _ K.
J. Jesudas (for the songs, ``Kaliveedurangiyallo'' and ``Yathrayayi'', from the
film, ``Desaadanam'', and ``Parvati Manohari'' from ``Thooval Kottaram''); best
female playback singer _ Sujatha (for the song, ``Pranayamani'', from the film,
``Azhakiya Ravanan'').
Best
film editor _ L. Bhoominathan (``Kanakkinavu''); best art director _
Krishnamurthy (``Kulam''); best sound recordist _ Krishnanunni (``Desadanam'');
and, best film processing _ Gemini Colour Lab (``Kali Veedu''). No one has been
selected for the best make-up man award.
Best
costume designer _ Ooty Babu (``Ee Puzhayum Kadannu''); best dubbing artiste _
Venmani Vishnu (``Desadanam''); best documentary _ ``Silent Screams: A Village
Chronicle'', produced by Jose Sebastian and directed by O. K. Johnny; best
children's film _ no selection; best debut filmmaker _ Sundar Das
(``Sallapam''); award for brilliance in any aspect of cinematic art _ Jayaram
(for his performance in several movies); best book on cinema _ ``Sanchariyude
Veedu'', written by I. Shanmughadas.
Fourteen
feature films, 10 documentaries, one children's film and four books on cinema
had competed for the awards. The jury included Mr. N. Gopalakrishnan, Mr. M. K.
Arjunan, Mr. Ravindran, Mr. Diwakara Menon and Mr. Karivalloor Murali.
The
committee to select the best book on cinema included Mr. Sreevarahom
Balakrishnan (chairman) and Mr. A. Kutbuddin. Mr. P. M. Senan was the secretary
of both the panels.
The
awards were announced by Culture Minister T.K. Ramakrishnan at a news
conference here yesterday.
